Skateboard wheels are available in a wide variety of sizes and degrees of hardness. The “right” combination of these two aspects can vary from one type of skating to the next, and even from skater to skater. Therefore, it often takes a bit of trial and error in order to find the ideal set up for your style of riding.
When it comes to skateboard wheels, size matters. Street and ramp skating is almost always done with smaller wheels in order to help maintain lower speeds and keep the board as lightweight as possible. However, longboarders tend to use larger wheels (bigger than 60mm) for greater speed and stability.
The hardness of skateboard wheels can also play a significant factor. Harder wheels are generally used for street and ramps, whereas softer wheels are preferred for longboards. Hardness ratings are determined through a system of measurement called durometer, and this measurement is usually printed on the wheel.
