Longboard wheels are different than what one would typically find on a standard skateboard. Unlike a normal skateboard, longboards are designed for speed and stability, and as such they require different characteristics from the wheels. Fortunately, the popularity of the longboard has given rise to a host of available options.
As a general rule, longboard wheels are typically much larger than those used for other styles of skateboarding. The larger sizes allow for faster speeds, but also provide a much higher degree of stability as well. However, the “best” size is largely a matter of opinion and changes from rider to rider.
The durometer rating should also be taken into consideration when buying longboard wheels. This rating refers to the hardness of the wheel, and depending on one’s riding preferences can change. Softer wheels are better suited to carving, as they tend to grip better, but harder wheels offer higher overall speeds.
